The second exhibition held by the Art Center was the Dutch artist Teun Hocks (1947-, Born in Leiden), the title of the exhibition is: Commedia Dell’ Arte Dutch Style.

Hocks ‘s works are different, they are interesting, joyful but they also permeate the meaning of tragedy, sadness or melancholy. Hocks is an artist who is full of temptation and revealing the truth. Our lives are multifaceted. And we often bring face to face wanders, hides our feelings or pretends to be extraordinary. Although the scenes in Hocks’ paintings are almost familiar to us. Yet, but through his works we get a deeper experience, funny, strange, absurd, tragedy.

The artist himself being immersed in the scene, like actors on stage playing with these rules, his work shows the “quiet” state of drama. In this field, Hocks has a wide range of whimsical ideas, and can clearly show this dramatic form in front of us, every time is different. The names of his works are called “Untitled”, because we can learn from the works by ourselves.

The European painter Mr. Pieter Holstein was invited by CEAC to Xiamen as the first artist in residence to work here and make a show of his art. In the last three months Mr. Pieter has created many works, which we can see now here in the show.

He loves Xiamen and the long historical culture of China. Several times he expressed his love and addiction to Chinese traditional art to me. He has the feeling that one can appreciate beauty from the Chinese traditional painting in many different ways and expressed the following Contemporary artists are more focused on creating or inventing an own style than reflecting on the reality of our times. Ancient traditional painting has an abstract richness. The traditional style nowadays tries to keep that richness intact but lacks often a reflection on the reality of our times and it lacks often life, inventiveness, variation and the spirit we find with the old masters.

Maybe Mr Pieters opinion can give us some help to understand and appreciate his art of land. He seldom paints cityscapes, but is more inclined to feel and express something about landscape. The image he has created is just like nature itself, pure and direct. Pieter’s seeing is very unique, as we can see from his work that does find the rhythm of the line from the wave of the water,
and dynamical reaction between the dots and lines from mountain and water.

The soul of nature comes to pieter with its richness which drives him constantly to find
and give new life to the form and space. From his art we may see some similarities between
his landscape and the Chinese ancient art, even though he apparently remains individual in
his painting. I think this kind of combination is especially charming when art today is
becoming more and more international.

Zheng Wenbin was born in 1971. He studied oil painting at the Xiamen University Art College where he graduated in 1996. The last few years Wen Bin worked for the Xiamen Daily but recently he quitted his job there to work fulltime on his art. This exhibition at the Chinese European Art Center is his first exhibition.

About his exhibition the following could be said:The world of the real and the artificial is what this is about. To observe how living people can mangle a puppet made of plastic. Or how the so called real world appear to us sometimes as being less present than the artificial world. How a plastic puppet can become so closed to us and yet being so different. Sometimes it seems as if our artificial creation is growing beyond our limits.

Zheng Wenbin is very devoted to his art and it is obvious that his way of looking is original and honest. One can only be curious to follow his development in the future.

Guido Vlottes can be seens a painter who stands within the tradition of Dutch art, which is abroad mainly known by it’s 17 century paintings. His attitude to reality and his way and technique of painting are however at all sides different from the portraits, landscape or still lifes of more than three centuries ago, although he remains realated to his ancestros. During the abstraction of the 20th century — when the autonomous artworks ruled the waves — a new realism the Netherlands cames as a reaction that has maintained itself onto now. This realism is dealing with the life and experiences of the painter, but they are not translated in an exact copy of what has been seen or felt. The spectator is, one can say, part of the painting, and with is knowledge and experiences the spectator completes the painting. This can be compared with the Chinese calligraphy — signs originated in reality — which are meaningful and representative, without only representing waht they mean.

In Vlottes’ paintings there are no exact meanings, but you can guess what they represent.

The painter gives us “hints” about objects and their floating palces in space and time. This titles of his paintings are also hints, pointers to our experiences. What we know of as “normal” is in Vlottes’ work represented in an unusal
way and in an ususal space. Something is happening, something that can not be
described, but it can be felt or guessed. That curious atmosphere makes the work
of Vlottes intriguing and exciting.

Vander heyden is a painter, who’s concern is an intensification of life as a whole. You see fragment of the reality, chosen by chance. The artistic reality with interiors, details of paintings, screens, bluesky, clouds, horizon, TV’s references to art history, nature, grids, photographs, flying in airplanes, mountains(the unreachable Himalaya), fragments of fragments of images, impressions of space, instruments etc. He made cabins-as a head in which images a restored-in which you see the same fragments, ordered in another way than elsewhere and more intimate.

The formats are large or very small, as you remember things in your head, some events were more important than others, in his work is a scarch for unexpected connections between these fragments, between inside and outside, between the image and reality-a TV set with the convex glass facing upwards, covered with plastic foil. The rain fell on the TV set, while the TV showed the weather forecast.

We all have in our head thousands of images. In our dreams they occur from time to time. Everyday we receive new images, which a restored. Vander heyden -you can say-shows us how he handles with his reality and his image and the relations between them.
