2022 marks the 23rd anniversary of the Chinese European Art Center (CEAC) taking root in Xiamen, and also the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Netherlands. At this significant moment, the Chinese European Art Center, Xiamen Powerlong Art Centerand the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou jointly present Rolling Snowball 14 — a Sino-Dutch Contemporary Visual Art Exhibition with the theme of “Ni Hao?” This exhibition will showcase 36 artists from the Netherlands and China who have strong ties with two countries. They have participated in various ways in the practices organized by CEAC in the past few years, including the artist-in-residence program in Xiamen, the solo exhibitions and the traveling exhibitions of the Rolling Snowballseries. The efforts of CEAC throughout the 20 years have contributed to the artistic practice and cultural exchanges between China and the Netherlands, allowing artists to gain rich experience in the exchanges and further develop their own work, and mean while stimulating active dialogues between the two countries in terms of ideas, information, art and artists. Through the this exhibition at Xiamen Powerlong Art Center, we want to share and discuss with the public the past and future exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. Besides, the exhibition is also an important cultural event launched by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and China and the Dutch Days Program.

“Ni Hao?” is a polite opening remark for a general meeting. After nearly two years of (international) travel bans and social distancing policy, the artist residency program, which is CEAC’s cornerstone, has been forced to suspend. Taking this exhibition at the Xiamen Powerlong Art Center as a new starting point, we would like to send a long-awaited greeting to all of you, includingthe old friends of CEAC. Is everyone good under the current new social order?

In this exhibition, “Ni Hao?” is not a courtesy. Embodying rich emotions,it will invite the audience to join the narrative to form an interactive and subjective extension of the situation. The essential thing is not the polite reply of “I’m fine, thank you”, but the conversation with old friends and new friends alike, who sit in a circle with “purposeless purposiveness” and are eager to know each other’s current situation after saying hello. As the speaker and questioner, we CEAC looks forward to receiving the audience’s answers from the
bottom of their heart. The exhibition aims to remove the subject’s state analysis
of existing issues by getting rid of the original question frame. It is more of
various connections extending “Ni Hao?” to individuals, groups, related events,
and relational research implying the orientation for the current experience, or
a question/rhetorical question in the present tense.

“Ni Hao?” presents the audience with a visual narrative consisting of five chapters.
The exhibition site is related and interactive with the artworks and the chapters.
Throughout the narrative, the “person” becomes the subject of the greeting. With
“Man and Poetry” as the first chapter, the audience pays attention to the poetic
nature that flows between man and others, and furthermore to the wider world.
We are driven by distant similarity and ask “How are you?” This greeting can either
be an impromptu melody, or the liveliness when passing others. No matter it is as
big as the universe or as small as a roadside stone, it can be equally colorful or dull.

In the second chapter “Artificial and Natural”, we wander around the material basis
that has been recreated. Artificial intervention is already an important part of the
natural landscape that we see; while the photographed wilderness is also selectively
edited, presenting an artificial virtual world for the human spirit to roam, with a
tendency of being regulated by AI. In this sense, our living space is already a blend
of artificial and natural.

To further explore this altered nature, we are about to delve into the third chapter,
namely “Individual and Group,” where groups are regarded as composite and independent
beings that perceive the world around them. Medium, book and texture are the nature
faced by the individual and the trace left by the group.

When the group respond to “How are you?”, the questioner not only gains the information
from the group, but also sees his or her own shadow between the lines of the response.
As the boisterousness fades away, the audience will enter the fourth chapter “Inner Channel”.
Walking through the dark paths, they will see humorous or heavyimages of self and others,
as if in front ofmultiple mirrors, through whichtheywitness the joys and sorrows of “I”
without any emotional changes.

“A few moresteps, and we suddenly became enlightened,” wrote one ancient Chinese essay.
There is more than one way out in our heart, and what we see from each exit will be the
fifth chapter “Me and the World”. There is a realmess, the unspeakable, the vicissitudes
of life, the small household affairs and the fragile, which are diverse, calm, lively,
chaotic and orderly. And all of these constitute the “world” that “I” face.

Welcome to the Rolling Snowball 13, Djupivogur. Featuring the seventh collaboration between the Chinese European Art Center and the Municipality of Djupivogur in Iceland, this exhibition is also a record for this special year 2020.
In this exhibition we are proud to show the works of 20 young Icelandic artists who are (most of them) taking their first steps in the professional art world. Besides them we also show 10 artists from China, Holland and Iceland. We have found Kristin Dagmar Johannesdottir willing to be the curator for this edition of the Snowball and are thankful to her.

Over the past months (and even still) the world is confronted with huge challenges: Behavior is restricted, physical distance is required, relationships are redefined, and the inherent situation is changing rapidly, the various “new normal” make us feel the necessity to be closely connected, to learn from each other, to improve ourselves or increase our capacity as global think tank for each other.

Despite the uncertainties and devastating occurrences hope always exists and therefore after a careful consideration we have decided to do the Rolling Snowball exhibition as scheduled within the limits that the circumstances allow.

Finally, we would like to thank all the friends who participate in this project and the Municipality of Djupivogur. We hope that all of you will stay healthy and we are looking forwards to see you all again.

This is the sixth Rolling Snowball exhibition the CEAC organizes with the Municipality of Djúpivogur.

When we started the first Snowball exhibition in 2014, many people didn´t believe that this enterprise would make sense in a small fishers village with fewer than 500 inhabitants and that it would turn out to be of cultural importance for the people in Djúpivogur and even for the Icelandic art scene as later became evident.

The people of Djúpivogur are every year highly committed to this cultural event and the community, the people of the village, have been more than willing to assist and make it possible to realize each exhibition. In the four weeks the exhibition is on display, we have got up to 6000 visitors every time to watch the show.

Djúpivogur and CEAC have many things in common: They are both small, which can be seen as quality; they are close to the people; they are both in favor of the spirit of Citta Slow. Djúpivogur, the only municipality in Iceland, is participating in. And we avoid all kinds of snobbism in our activities.

The exhibiting artists in this Snowball are from China and European countries, such as Iceland and Holland. They have all voluntarily offered their works for this exhibition and we are deeply grateful to them for that. Many of them have come to Djúpivogur to help installing their art works – some of them are even from another continent like Asia.

As we all know, if an exhibition has no art works or the artists, there is nothing to celebrate. We are also thankful to Þór Vigfússon and Gréta Mjöll Samúelsdóttir. Without them this Snowball would not have been possible.

We welcome the visitors to this exhibition.

The exhibition will be opened by Lilja D. Alfreðsdóttir, Icelandic Minister of Education, Science and Culture, Ms. Gao Chunyan, chargéd’ affaires, Embassy of The People’s Republic of China in the Republic
of Iceland, Gauti Jóhannesson, Mayor of Municipality of Djupivogur.
Many participating artists will attend the opening as well.

At 3:00 afternoon,on December 15, 2018.”Rolling Snowball•Nanjing” will be opened at AMNUA.This exhibition is led by Li Xiaoshan as the art director. Ineke Gudmundsson as the academic adviser and Chen Rui, Li Meilan are appointed as the curators. This exhibition will focus on the art works of 52 Chinese and foreign artists, including sketches, paintings, oil paintings, photography, installations, sculptures, performance, images and some comprehensive mediums.

Since 2010, “Rolling Snowball”project has been initiated by the China European Art Center and has been held for eleventh. The Rolling Snowball event brings together Chinese and foreign artists from different part of the world, whose fields span a wide range of media. This cultural exchange and cooperation has greatly enriched the culture, ideas and concepts of artists from all over the world, and helped them to refine their artistic views and redefine their relationship with the arts. This cross-cultural exchange is part of its thinking and is of great benefit to their work and connections at home and abroad.

International exchange is a nutrient for art itself. Art flows in every corner of the world. Cultural exchange can also be considered an art of perspectives. In the long history of intercultural relations, preconceptions and old narratives were tested, revised and adjusted through both dialogues and conflicts. In the best scenarios, we learn from one another and seek commonality despite differences, leading to deeper mutual understanding and greater mutual respect. The culture of the “other” is also like a mirror, reflecting our own cultural texture, so that we can look at ourselves more objectively through the perspective of the other. A richer perspective brings a broader perspective, and it allows us to become more aware of our own foothold in the broader world.

Djúpivogur has been an active trade location in Iceland for over 400 years. Foreign merchants, who were, among others, German and Danish, brought not only foreign products but also exotic cultural influences that contributed to the shaping of local flavors and cultural life, which today is dynamic and diverse.

To promote diversity further, Djúpavogshreppur became a member of the Cittaslow movement which consists of small local organizations in 27 countries around the world. Cittaslow’s goal is to enhance people’s quality of life and satisfaction by offering resistance to globalization, uniformity and compulsive speed in cities and towns of modern times and instead honor the uniqueness of each municipality. To achieve this goal Cittaslow municipalities concentrate on the protection of natural and cultural heritage, environmental beautification and quality, promotion of local cuisine, hospitality, courtesy and maintaining friendly relationships.

It is in this spirit that Djúpavogshreppur became involved in the project ´Rolling Snowball-5, Djúpivogur’ in cooperation with the CEAC since 2014. Many people might wonder why such an extensive art exhibition is being installed in a small fishing village in Iceland. But giving it a closer look it should be no surprise. Djúpivogur has a long history and its inhabitants have for ages celebrated cultural influences that often came from faraway places with traders, fishermen and others who came to the village for a short or long stay. Writers and other artists have for the past several years sought inspiration for their work from the environment and the people in Djúpivogur and I hope that will continue.

The willingness of the municipality of Djúpivogur is clear. We will continue to strengthen and contribute to the rich cultural life and welcome all who want to be a part in that journey. By doing so we advance the quality of life of those who live here and at the same time encourage others to visit us.

“Power of the Image” is a part of the series of activities of “The Wild of China”, which is the brand of “Public Relations of Image” created by China Public Relations Association (CPRA). In 2017, the theme of the photography culture exhibition is “Fusion across Transcendence, Beauty of Datong”, which responds to the “One Belt & One Road” initiative to promote world cultural exchanges and mutual learning and understanding. This activity is jointly hosted by China Public Relations Association (CPRA) and the People’s Government of Datong. It brings together the international and domestic photographers with our photography enthusiasts. Till 2017, “Power of the Image” International Photography Culture Exhibition has been successfully held for 3 editions. It will set up the “Guest of Honor” for the first time, which is regarded as the special guest cooperation country. The countries of “Guest of Honor” will have individual Image culture exhibition areas, where will show more than 100 most influential works reflecting the country’s natural landscape, local customs and civilization achievement. Holland, Russia and Pakistan were invited as the countries of “Guest of Honor” for the first time. CEAC will present over 100 works on the exhibition as the representative of the guest country — Holland. At the same time, the delegation of Holland will attend the exhibition ceremony, which includes: the president of the Rijksakademie Janwillem Schrofer, outstanding famous artists Marjan Laaper,
Tara Fallaux and Peer Veneman, the lecturer of modern and contemporary art
at Utrecht University Linda Boersma.

The vast majority of the Dutch artists featured in this exhibition have been on
CEAC’s residency program at some point in their career. The display showcases a
variety of subject matters, styles and creative methods, and also features a
small number of video works in conjunction with photography to give the viewers
a taste of other possibilities of lens-based artistic practice by Dutch contemporary artists.

The power of a photographic image, therefore, lies in its ability to not only
record the physical world or represent an objective reality but also reflect
our inner worlds, serving as a testament to our subjective realities. Cultural
exchange can also be considered an art of perspectives. In the long history of
intercultural relations, preconceptions and old narratives were tested, revised
and adjusted through both dialogues and conflicts. In the best scenarios, we
learn from one another and seek commonality despite differences, leading to
deeper mutual understanding and greater mutual respect. It is hoped that with
this grand debut of Dutch contemporary art in Datong – one of China’s ancient
cultural cities and the start point of the Silk Road in China’s North Wei Dynasty(386-534AD),
visitors will be inspired to contemplate and appreciate with expanded perspectives
the connections between the past and the present, and between different parts of the world,
in this increasingly interconnected and interdependent world we co-inhabit.

The American writer and scholar Erik Davis says “artists are uniquely placed to … creatively participate in the larger cultural process of re-engineering subjectivity, of pushing the envelope of experience”. Almost a precursor to that process is artists actively seeking to re-engineer their own subjective reality and pushing the boundaries of their own experience. And some artists achieve that by encountering a different culture.

Since 1999, the Chinese European Art Center, deeply rooted in its home base on the subtropical island of Amoy, has served as a home away from home to more than 300 artists and creative professionals from all around the world. For 18 years, CEAC has been fortunate to be a part of the life-changing, perception-altering journeys of some of the world’s most brilliant creative minds. Witnessing the familiar becomes unfamiliar and vice versa for those who engage in CEAC’s work, it was decided from the very beginning that liberation, transformation and growth through inter-cultural dialogues are at the core of CEAC’s organizational mission.

Home is not only a physical location but also a state of mind – a sense of belonging. It is sometimes necessary to step out of your comfort zone to gain a wider perspective on where you’ve come from as it is only then that our assumptions are re-examined, our sense of identity renewed. The intellectual and emotional gymnastics that accompany such experiences can sometimes lead to an intensely satisfying aesthetic experience – the aesthetics of elsewhere.

Similarly, traveling does not have to involve changing your physical location. It can happen in the minds, here and now, for those who are curious about what the world has yet to offer, about alternative ways of seeing and being.

This exhibition celebrates the endeavor of the explorer of embarking on a journey of discovery, of both the world and oneself. It is also hoped that it may inspire curiosity and stimulate meaningful exchanges of ideas and points of view in this increasingly interconnected world we live in today.

The Chinese European Art Center (CEAC) in Xiamen, China has been organizing large-scaled group exhibitions outside of Xiamen and even outside China since 2010. A total of six of them have been realized in collaboration with local cultural organizations in cities including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Quanzhou in China and in Djupivogur, Iceland. These group exhibitions brought together international artists from the full spectrum of disciplines including drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, video and performance. They serve as the perfect occasion for establishing partnerships, cultural exchange and creating exposure.

The two Rolling Snowball exhibitions that were organized in cooperation with the municipality of Djupivogur in 2014 and 2015 were a great success. The event forms a highlight in the village over the summertime and attracts over 3500 international and national visitors during one month. This year we invited the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, to join the project. The Rijksademie residency is an institute for emerging professional artists from all over the world. It offers selected artists a platform for further development of their work during a two years’ work period. We are very proud to work with Rijksakademie on this event.

The exhibition Rolling Snowball 7, Djupivogur in the old fish factory Brathslan, is liberated from a theme or one single curatorial perspective. Rather is strives and succeeds to show outstanding international and national artists together in the grand old fish factory, exchanging ideas and working together. Twenty-two renowned Icelandic artists from different generationsa are invited to present works together with ten young artists of the Rijksakademie. They show existing works within the exhibition or install a site specific work. Encounters with Icelandic artists and villagers, exchange of practices, work and life are a crucial part of the event. At the same time the show promotes emerging Icelandic and Dutch art.

We thank the municipality of Djupivogur and the villagers for their hospitality, and Alfa Freysdottir, Thor Vigfusson and Erla Dora Vogler for helping us achieve yet another successful event. We thank the Rijksakademie and our sponsors the Mondriaan Fund and Uppbyggingarsjothur Austurlands for making this event possible. Last but not least we thank the artists for sharing their work with us, and the public in Iceland. We are looking forward to a wonderful experience with all of you in the summer of 2016.

Rolling Snowball/6 is an international visual art exhibition that presents the works of 26 visual artists from Iceland, China, the Netherlands and other countries.

The exhibition was initiated by the Chinese European Art Center (CEAC) in Xiamen, Fujian province. CEAC, founded in 1999, is a non-profit art center with an artist – in – residence program open to visual artists, architects, designers, curators and writers. The art center’s exhibition calendar consists of ten to twelve shows annually, with supplementary programs including lectures and workshops, outdoor video and film festivals and concerts.

CEAC’s main task is to establish contact between Chinese and Western cultures. In Xiamen, CEAC has organised numerous exhibitions of Chinese and Western artists, and since 2010 large group exhibitions have been held in Shanghai, Quanzhou, Guangzhou and, for the first time in Europe, in Djúpivogur, Iceland in 2014.

After last years success CEAC is proud to present the second exhibition in Djúpivogur; Rolling Snowball/6, as well as the second summer artist – in – residence program.

We thank the Municipality of Djúpivogur for their good advice, support, their wonderful collaboration and for giving us the opportunity to show the exhibition in the old fish factory in Djúpivogur.

Last but not least we thank the artists for sharing their work with us, and the public in Iceland. It is with your participation that we are able to make this special project happen.
