Ministerie van Berge en Shi(MBS) is a Sino-Dutch agency that activates an exchange P2P network. Through visual and research projects MBS bridges the geo-cultural distance. Hereby the focus lays on the creation of a connection between individuals from various disciplines and backgrounds. MBS is now operating a interdisciplinary research-based project entitled 50/50 inspired by the Sino-Dutch 50th Anniversaries of 2022. Here in MBS focuses on the current trade of goods and ideas between the two nations.

We are Huilin Shi (CN) and Laila van Berge (NL), and we are initiating a creative interdisciplinary research-based project as a duo specifically celebrating and reflecting on the Sino-Dutch-50 Anniversaries in 2022. We met during our studies at KABK in the Hague, where we were sharing the same workspace and have been exhibiting together in multiple group shows. Despite our different backgrounds and working methods, we share a similar interest in cultural identity and have a playful and experimental approach to the treated materials. Motivated by the rooted history of the Sino-Dutch partnership, in this intercultural exploration, we are both committed to collaboration.

Li Jiawen’s real-life account of a fraud is told through the eyes of a young woman who sells flowers for a living. The figure in the work is driven away, wandered, and encounters the same experience in a different time and space in a state of limbo.

The artist forensically revisits, deconstructs, and reconstructs this experience, extracting visual elements and coded language, fusing time, place, and events to recreate an unstable space-time, filled with fragments of elements from different dimensions. The artist’s individualized perspective creates a thread that collides in a cascade of virtual and real events. The artist does not present a direct facsimile of the events but leaving gaps in these ‘scenes’ for the viewer’s imagination.

Liuyuanyuan’s artistic practice stems from the dual pursuits of cognizing the true self and exploring a free mind, and during this process, she has been building a self-consistent creation system——the “Bottle”, and it contains concepts such as transitional abstraction, deconstruction-construction-reconstruction, geometric structure, and shadow zone. Meaningless is the core concept of the “Bottle”, which means space, interspace, and nothing. At the same time, she created the Bottle Language, which is the imagined community in the sense of the Bottle. She uses the Bottle Language to create works to construct the Bottle World.

Dancing girl

I made a fictional historical type of work this time. It comes from specific texts of real historical events. It shows the event of dance girls’ against the ban on dancing. I separated some textual objects from it, but the author did not personally experience the event. He explored the panorama of the event by searching, reviewing and researching historical archives of relevant parties, books and oral history, as well as a comprehensive analysis of these materials and in-depth thinking.

The sociologist Maurice Halbwachs proposed the concept of “collective memory” in 1925, and this concept was later extended. It believes that researchers can study how to remember the past through landscapes or spaces through topics such as ceremonies, monuments, museums, and war journeys. But all interpretations are unstable, the truth is a meaningless concept, and all narratives have their inclinations. Thinking about history is taboo? Perhaps because of this, fiction has an amazing appeal for both the creator and the audience.

In this exhibition, I tried to present a living literature on the basis of fiction. It evolved from oral history, not only remembering words, but also remembering forms and imagery. “Every true history is contemporary history.” I am not gonna tell you the whole story now, but maybe you can figure it out at the exhibition site.

I used to want to have a tube of my own blood so that I could show it in my exhibition. However, the doctor said that “no, we have to destroy it, you can’t keep it.” Finally I got an inspection report.

My blood has entered the medical procedures of the society and will soon be gone. Obliteration of somebody components destroy the fake-self-sense of belonging and domination to the body.

I don’t own me.

This is an exhibition of the recent works of Hu Tianyi and Li Wenqiang, focusing on life, nature and human beings. The common point of the works is to explore a way of growing. Whether the growing as metaphor is latent and creeping, or the relationship is adjusted in a material way, it is inseparable from human will and human manipulation. When we say something is growing, it may be spontaneous and natural. And when we talk about the way it grows, it means that the human subject is trying to understand the context of the situation. A driving force of life, always in alienation, mechanical, deem bodied, centralized…And so human creation is suppressed and ignored. Is the human subject driven by cognition to explore the source of his or her animality? Is there an urge to participate and change? How man confronts nature may depend on how he confronts himself.

Luuk Schröder’s work deals with looking and the way this is affected by technology.

His methodology is based on experimentation with viewing angles, sculptural interventions, new and outdated media equipment and a range of performative gestures. Most of the work is made in reaction to existing spaces. The resulting videos, sculptures and images are site-specific to the point where they occasionally blend into the surrounding space.

Jing Jin’s practice focuses on the constant questioning of the experience of life and the feeling of existence. She is accomplished in showing the contradictions acquiesced in today’s society with a sense of humor from the parallel view both as spectator and participator. Her works often retain a Sequential sense of calmness and distance, conveying “meaning” to their opposites while presenting “meaning”. The additional contrasting ideas, such as the poetic and the rational; the wasteful and the efficient; the playful and the utterly serious, are also explored and exhibited inside one frame in Jin’s work.

Liu Yuanyuan was born in 1990 and now lives in Xiamen, China.Graduated from Xiamen University and awarded Bachelor of Aesthetics. In 2013, Liu founded the brand of MSPECTER in Xiamen. As a curator, Liu curated various art activities like Black’s Cutting and Materializing Consumption.

Liu Yuanyuan’s artistic practice takes her-ideology as an object to interpret and research. She outputs her ideology into a visual spectacle, which evolves from abstractive to minimalist, and finally returns to a phantom.Based on the entities created during her exploration, Yuanyuan is building up a self-consistent system, named “The Bottle Theory”.

My name is Luc Vandervelde Lux. I’m an artist / painter from Brussels (Belgium). Two years ago I made a major change in my work. Originally, I was influenced strongly by photorealism; but I always wanted to be an abstract painter. So I challenged myself to become one.
