Ben Taranto is an interdisciplinary artist with a sculpture and installation based practice. His practice shifts between art and earth sciences, while balancing the physical with the transcendental. His work considers the human condition in relation to built, natural and virtual environments.

Physical materials such as glass, concrete and steel, often combined with non-physical elements such as the moving image, space, light and sound are used to explore how our senses assist us to perceive, relate and respond to various built and natural environments.

Taranto recognises his art practice as existing within the Anthropocene or Human Era. The unofficially named present era in which we modern humans now live, control and impact on major events such as climate, the alteration and movement of large amounts of earth, and the reduction of biodiversity from oceans, seas and rivers globally.

I am fascinated by the ways of doing things. – I`m using different levels and views of the image, different connections of expressions and visualisation of a feeling, a mentality or a process of thoughts. They are coming out of a view on life through the living process. – Visualisation of unthought things, the limitation of visualisation put into poetry or out of reflections of so called rules and laws on any level. – Exercises to preserve the fantasy and imagination. (1200 oil drawings and etchings).

In drawings shapes and spaces and their intricate interweaving are followed. In watercolours fields and shapes of fleshy colour are depicted. The artist alternates making small structured paintings with thickly applied paint with periods of drawing and making watercolors. Both are sides of an earthiness underlying all works, referring to landscapes and spaces which can be seen as landscapes of our thoughts. The title Stay put refers to a quote from the book One square inch of silence by Gordon Hempton and John Grossmann. This book tells about a man’s journey to investigate and preserve silence as a human right to be able to connect with ourselves. -Stay put is also needed to make the works. -Stay put is needed to look at them and see. Stay put and concentrates on what you see in your everyday surroundings. There you”ll find wonderful shapes and colours in a cat, fruit, a plant or tree. All the miracles of the world are in closed in that surrounding, if you take time and see.

Bob Takes (1953) is a steel sculpture artist based in Antwerp. He studied graphic design and audiovisual design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in the 80’s. Although his art is diversified, his background in graphic design is still clearly recognizable. Within his autonomous work Takes likes to play around and balance on the border of abstract and figurative. In the past Takes showed his work in established art spaces but also on a large scale in public spaces. Within most of the processes he goes through in order to make an artwork, he combines the digital with the manual. He came to Xiamen to take this merging of digital craft and manual craft a step further.

Bart Dorst (NL)

Drawings are most of the time the source of the works of the Dutch artist Bart Drost. Small sketches, scribbles and diary drawings turn out into paintings, sculptures, installations or even performances. Together with the former MAAS Artist in Residence Zhixing Jia, Drost visited the Venice Biennale in 2011. The drawings Drost made during this trip are the starting point for the three large format paintings (indian ink and gesso on bitumen paper) now shown at CEAC.

HERE WE HAVE ALL MICKEYS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.HIS MOTHER, HIS FATHER, HIS SISTER, HIS BROTHER, HIS GRANDMOTHER,HIS GRANDFATHER, HIS COUSIN, HIS AUNT, HIS UNCLE, HIS SWEETHEART, HIS NEIGHBOUR, HIS LOST FRIEND.
THEY ARE ALL SINGING ”WHERE IS MICKEY” OVER AND OVER AGAIN, THEY ARE ALL LOOKING FOR MICKEY, THEY ALL MISS MICKEY.
MAYBE IT IS MICKEY MOUSE, THE LITTLE SMART GUY WHO BEAT ALL THE BIG BAD GUYS, MAYBE ITS THE GOOD AMERICAN WHO SAVED THE WORLD FROM FASCISM DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, AND GENEROUSLY HELPED THE WORLD AFTER, SO WE NOW FOR GOOD AND BAD ARE A PART OF THE GLOBAL VILLAGE, BUT IN THIS GLOBALIZED WORLD WHERE ALL THE BIG GUYS AND ALL THE BIG MONEY MAKES US ALL BECOME THE SAME, THE SAME CARS, SAME FOOD, SAME MOVIES, SAME COCA-COLA, SAME SHOES, SAME IDEALS, WE NEED MICKEY TO FIGHT BACK SO WE AT SAME TIME CAN WORK TOGETHER AND BE DIFFERENT, UNITY THROUGH DIVERSITY.
BUT MAYBE WE ALL ARE LOOKING FOR MICKEY, MAYBE WE ALL ARE LOOKING FOR THE MEANING OF LIFE, LOVE AND DEATH, WE TRY TO BUY THE MEANING THROUGH BIGGER AND BIGGER CARS, BUT WHAT WE NEED IS TO FIND MICKEY INSIDE OURSELF.
SO ”WHERE IS MICKEY”.
4. THE INSTALLATION ”ATYPIA”. IN THE 15TH CENTURY THOMAS MOORE WROTE HIS FAMOUS BOOK ”UTOPIA”, AND SINCE THEN THE WORLD HAS SUFFERED FROM MORE BIG IDEAS, ABOUT HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT ”UTOPIA”, THE PROBLEM WAS, THAT IF THE MAN DID NOT FIT TO THE THEORY, IT WAS NOT THE THEORY WHO SHOULD BE CHANGED, BUT THE MAN. IN ”ATYPIA” IT IS THE OTHER WAY AROUND, HERE COMES THE SINGLE INDIVIDUAL PERSON FIRST, AND ANY VARIATION THAT IS CARRIED OUT, WITH LOVE AND RESPECT FOR OTHER PEOPLES VARIATIONS, CAN BLOSSOM IN ”ATYPIA”

MANY THANKS TO WOW-WORKSHOP,RODNEY,STEVENS AND THEIR STAFF,WITHOUT THEIR GENEROUS HELP THIS HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE.
