Yi Chen currently lives in Xiamen, China. He received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2019. Chen walks around between digital and analog in photography. His photographs have always been about the perception of reality versus reality by creating their own sense of place, yet they are often manipulated digitally or shot in studio environments- thus evoking a sense of alienation through both form and content.

Cathelijn van Goor (1976) is an Amsterdam (the Netherlands) based artist. She graduated from the Royal Academie of Fine Arts in The Haque in 1999.
In her drawings and paintings she shows the passing of time and time related aspects. In her most recent works she focuses on the business and fast live in big modern cities. One of her main questions is whether technological development really achieves progress. Themes like upcoming individualism, people that lose contact with their human nature and the fragmented way of living that appears in a zap culture play an important role.

I tend to discover inspiration from tiny or neglected things, I try to break that inflexible cognitive models. In this work, I use various soft materials, and make plates of different sizes by carving, burning and weaving. The changes caused by interaction between objects become very important. Soft and hard, fuzzy and clear, destruction and reconstruction, physics and fantasy, private and public, I attempt to seek for contradiction and connection from behaviors that seem to be random, and reconstruct a new way of communication and aesthetics by using personal and nonsensical narrative.

Morrison’s works can be as time consuming for the audience as for the artist. However once the layers start to exude their mysterious gloom, the viewer will be gifted with sensibilities that by far surpass a purely visual experience.

“Unhappy, no passion, and without contact, are the characteristics of lonely animals. A lonely person lives in a room in a city, maybe each room in the city is exactly the same.” This sometimes extremely detached personal experience of people living in present society, is the topic on which my works focus on at the moment.

]]> http://www.ceac99.org/7634/artists/feed/ 0 Colette Hosmer http://www.ceac99.org/8155/artists/ http://www.ceac99.org/8155/artists/#respond Tue, 16 May 2006 09:40:55 +0000 http://www.ceac99.org/?p=8155

Hosmer can be described as a contemporary naturalist, but her work has always displayed elements of surrealism and minimalism. Her dogged use of repetition and explorations of symmetry resonate with Agnes Martin’s obsession with grids. The narrative evident in her work shares, with the outdoor installations of organic materials by Andy Goldsworthy, an aspect that celebrates nature and demands that we renew our attention to it. But Hosmer’s work may have even more in common with that of John James Audubon. In it’s singularness of purpose and rejection of sentimentality. Hosmer’s depiction of animals, coupled with her arrangement of them to shape specific ideas, echo Audubon’s illustrations of birds: unrelentingly raw, sometimes beautiful, and always revealing. And like Audubon, she deals directly with the real thing, not a romanticized ideal viewed from a distance. Her work skirts the tiring political rhetoric of environmental issues and takes us to the core instead.
