In her work, Wei Na is occupied with a research of people in their daily life. She focuses on the psychological aspects of her subjects. The result is always a conflict with the conventional attitudes and judgments of the society of the person in question.

Her recent project “Are you rich?” and the previous project “Tell me what love is” show the reality of contemporary Chinese society, where love and richness are on the edge of a changing revolution, through her own experiences and investigation, and discover some beautiful, interesting and wise ideas from all that.

Wei Na graduated from the Fine Art Department of Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam in 2010 with a M.A. Before that, she graduated from the Art College at Xiamen University with a M.A. Her field of investigation is photography and video art. Wineke Gartz
Title: River Walk 2009
Running time: 12 minutes

A video collage made with two partly overlapping video projections of images shot in Kitakyushu, Japan in 2003 and 2004. Wineke Gartz became friends with some of the homeless men and women at the time she was living in Japan during a one year artist residency at that time. The footage is shot in different times of the year, such as summer time, Christmas time and during the rainy season. ‘River Walk’ shows the homeless Japanese men and women in their habitats in public parks and alongside the rivers. In the center of town they were living underneath a steel arcade next to a shopping and amusement center called ‘River Walk’, where they had made the benches into their temporary homes. In Gartz’ video dyptich, these images are partly overlapping with images of a busy restaurant area nearby, and with images of the omnipresent Christmas decoration in the shopping streets: castles made out of Christmas lights. They form a comforting and utopian background for the homeless men. The song in the video is ‘House of cards’ by Radiohead. ‘River Walk’ is part of the project ‘Men become Flowers’ (2003 – 2006). See for more information the press release from VRIZA – Disclosures IV, Wineke Gartz, ‘Ueno Park’ (Amsterdam, 2005) at: http://www.vriza.nl/VRIZA/Ueno_Park_-_Wineke_Gartz.html
Next to the video’s and installations, Wineke Gartz wrote the short story ‘Men become Flowers’ (Japan, 2004). The text can be found at:

The three artists come from Nanjing. Their artforms include installation, videos and performance. They took part in the famous performance arts “Human VS Animals” in Qing liang Mountain, Nanjing. In 1998, they setup the working group “Post-idealism”. Facing the coming new century, they threw away all their idealistic burdens and setup an art group “W&G” to carryout their project. To them, arts are things that happen right now and right here, manifesting the way they exist in the same time and space.

Wang Shugang’s works is small and simple comparing to those complicated and extravagant modern installation art. Wang Shugang’s artistic language is of populace, comparing to the modern artists who are talking about for the populace but actually doing the noble creation.

Actually, when Wang Shugang was still a student in the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, he was facing this new artform with a conflict feeling. It was when he immigrated to Germany in 1989 than the started to know about this artform and took it as his creation means. Now, Wang Shugang is in his middle age. After 11 years artist life abroad, he is more sure of the way to make installations. In his point of view, installation is not only an international language, but also an effective tool of visual expression. Its effectiveness lies in that it can help the artist to use various materials to fully express his personal experiences in a contrast space, so that some meanings which can not be expressed by the traditional language can be expressed more clearly.
