Thomas C. Chung is a Chinese-Australian artist based in Melbourne. In 2004, Chung completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales. He is studying for his Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy degree in Melbourne.

In the last decade, he has represented Australia at the 2nd Land Art Biennial in Mongolia, 4th Ghetto Biennale in Haiti, 9th Shiryaevo Biennale in Russia, 1st Karachi Biennale in Pakistan, and The APS Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale in Malta. His recent exhibitions have included The 48th Rio Tinto & QAL Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards 2023, Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum, Australia; Drift Arts Festival, The Quarantine Station, Australia; Arte Laguna 2023, Arsenal Nord, Italy; STAGES: Life in Lockdown, Monash Gallery of Art, Australia; Lucca Art Fair, Real Collegio, Italy; Future Ready: Survival Now + Next, Anchorage Museum, Alaska.

Chung’s past decade has seen him being awarded selected residencies to Kemijärvi (Finland), Gothenburg (Sweden), Drammen (Norway), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Shanghai (China), Zürich (Switzerland), Hohenstein (Germany), Sapporo (Japan) and Xiamen (China). His work is included in public collections of Dexus (Melbourne, Australia); The Swatch Group (Biel, Switzerland); Swatch Art Peace Hotel (Shanghai, China), National Centre for Contemporary Arts (Moscow, Russia); Sofia Arsenal Museum for Contemporary Art (Sofia, Bulgaria); Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia); and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Seoul, South Korea), as well as various private collections in Australia and internationally.

Tanja Smit’s project is to read the world. Her paintings, drawings and textworks – manual repetitive interventions in newspapers, magazines and books – are the result of open working processes in which new and self-inflicted rules mix with anarchy. New meanings are revealed and constructed upon known surfaces. Some of the pieces undergo a (second) translation into music, performance or video. The works have been shown widely in Spain, the Netherlands and other countries in solo- and collective exhibitions, including in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the MACBA documentation center and La Virreina in Barcelona.

Photography and film give me an opportunity to fulfill my curiosity for the mysteries of everyday encounters. I am always interested in people’s vitality and fate, how we shape the world around us, and vice versa. On an emotional and narrative level, I am interested in looking at human bonds and at people’s being, both physical and mental: love relationships, family, friendship, childhood, aging, physical fragility, sensuality, courage, desire and hope. I recognize that these are very broad themes. But it’s this universality that creates a bond, touches us as we recognize common existential questions and feelings. The stories I tell through my photographs or films don’t provide answers to these questions. Hopefully, they act as moments of contemplation and recognition. This open humanist focus is the common strand between my personal projects and my commissioned work. Whether I am photographing and filming on assignment or for personal work, my drive is to tell stories that touch and inspire people.

TON ZWERVER(b. 1951, NL) lives and works in Amsterdam. He graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld academie and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. His work has been in a number of exhibitions, both in the Netherlands and abroad. He have had solo exhibitions in PS1 Contemporary Art Center-New York, the biennal in Sao Paulo, Brasil, Galerie Carlos Poy, Barcelona or Gemeente Museum, Arnhem to name a few. He is currently teaching at Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Basisjaar, Beeldhouwen, activity that he combines with his art practice.

Thór Vigfússon (b. 1954) lives and works in Iceland. He studied art in Iceland and Holland.

“The art of Thór Vigfússon (b. 1954) is not highly complex, although its technical aspect is often trickier than it appears, and its world of vibrant colours keeps the eye busy. It is; colour and form. However, colour and form are not mere details in art, but rather its true essence, the basis of everything we consider the art form to be. The search for the right balance between these two elements is crucial and eternal, and one sense in Vigfússon´s works a great longing for some sort of visual solution – a solution however, that most likely grows ever more remote as the artist approaches it.”

“Thór Vigfússon comes from a family of craftsmen with a keen eye for detail. While making his way through the gallery districts of foreign cities he is often drawn to hardware stores, where he adds to his colour-sample collection. These prove useful once he has mixed his own colours by hand and has to provide exact details concerning the final finish of his works.”

She is nominated for the county grant of North Rhine-Westphalia for young artists in 2015. The residency was generously supported by the National German Academic Foundation. Teresa Eng is a Canadian artist based in London, England. Her photographic practice is based on the act of observation and attempting to depict the invisible.

Memento is an exploration of different ideas ranging from seaside towns to patterns of consumption. Teresa is interested in how disparate images related to each other, forming a narrative that lies outside of how each individual image is read. In the exhibition, Teresa is presenting a body of work consisting of her photography along with objects that were collected during her two and a half month residency at Chinese European Art Centre.

I paint myself, my wife, my parents, the intimacy of my existence. I paint how it is to feel being ‘there’ — an affective someplace in which I find myself. This painting is not about objects, about commonplaces, about the mass produced material world. I do not sms images as if such tokens could create common space. Space is individual, complex, divided and difficult to communicate. A painting has to be looked at — not just electronically shared as a token. Electronic markers may establish a rational, sign posted way of being together — but this is abstract contact and very impersonal. The painting requires time, to make and to look at. It does not have an automatic sense and is not easily and simply shared. The painting makes demands on time and seeing. I have to puzzle often weeks to find the painting inn me and to be able to start to paint. And it is my intention that the viewer puzzle a moment to find a perspective and sense of meaning in what has been painted. We have images all around us as visual throwaways — moments of visual stimulation to be forgotten as quickly as they are displayed. The painting tries to slow down time – to demand a moment of attention in a world of images that fly about our heads unattended to. Do I have the right to demand the observer’s attention? Is this arrogant? In the visual chaos that we live in asking someone to really look at something is making an extraordinary demand. And I want the viewer to really look – I want to make that exceptional demand. It is not that I want to claim that what I have to say (paint) is so extraordinarily important. But I do want to claim that people who never look never see — when they do not look they don’t live relationships for they won’t see what they have. Therefore it is, I believe, crucially important to see — and painting is the art of seeing. It has been popular (for instance in postmodernism) to berate ‘seeing’. Seeing was supposedly too intellectual, too male, too aggressive. I wish to counter this critique. Not seeing is too blind, unfeeling and emotionless. Seeing is a key dimension to knowing one is alive. As long as one sees, one knows one exists — I see therefore I am. But in the monotony of garish consumerism one cannot see. I paint that there is seen – firstly by myself as the painter and thereafter by whomever is willing to look at my paintings.

Visiting jewelers and metal smiths across China gave me immediate realization of increasing lost of traditional jewelry/metalsmithing practice. The desires to learn, revitalize, and contribute to the traditions of Chines jewelry inspired this body of work. Paper money, “currency for the dead” is used to create the pieces, hinting the sentiment of mourning. Burning paper money at the temples and cemeteries is commonly practiced as offering for the dead, deities, and Buddha in China. Changing the status of a common material such as the paper money and reassigning it a different function as jewelry gives it new meaning. Rearraging familiar symbols like the phoenix to crate new silhouettes; layering the graphics elements creates texture and incorperating old photographs portrays events are the means of creating new context on the body as adornment.
