I’m an Australian artist living in Amsterdam. I like painting and drawing, and sometimes I do that, but often I’m looking for a way to disturb what has become too comfortable for me in making art, particularly painting. So far, this has led me to work in installation, sculpture, video, sound and sometimes short texts. I collect pieces of material and objects if I think they might come in handy, but I don’t like to push them too far. I prefer the early stages of making stuff. Those moments seem to be the most stupid, fun, lively and surprising, so I try to preserve that in the final piece. I started working like this while I was studying an MFA in painting in the Netherlands when I noticed that the mess accumulating in the cabinets of my studio was more interesting than the paintings I had hanging on the wall.

Born in 1990, Lin Jing is an exotic native of Shapowei, Xiagang District of Xiamen.
It is her habit to question all the fixed things; habits are also fixed. So this is a paradox. Because of this, she instinctively repeats some behaviors to dispel this doubt, and then continue the action until she is fully convinced that she has found the self.

My photographic work has involved placing myself in specific real-life contexts and documenting the interaction that takes place. These projects have involved traveling to France, Austria and Newfoundland where the social dynamics of each location have informed the images that I have produced. My art practice, focused almost exclusively on self-portraiture, underlines the importance of context and understanding one’s relationship to that context. By placing myself in various situations in the world and documenting my reactions to those situations, I am defining the different personas we construct socially. From this perspective, the choice of location for creating each project is a central component of the content of the artwork. Considering that China is the largest exporter of goods in the world and that it is emerging as a superpower built on the labor of its workforce, my project engages directly with the power dynamics at play in a global context. The photographs provide a human dimension to our abstract relationship to production and consumption.

In different ways and with diverse media, the Dutch/German artists Katrin Korfmann and Jens Pfeifer investigate cultural identities and juxtapose unfamiliar and common ideologies. The result of their three-month residency at the Chinese European Art Centre is a surprising manifest of how entrenched we are in our own culture, even though we are living and creating art in a globalized world where we can easily set up a temporary studio on the other side of the earth.

For over a decade Brussels based artists Katleen Vermeir & Ronny Heiremans have realized acclaimed projects nationally and internationally. Their work has been presented in Brussels, Istanbul, London, Montreal and New York. The work of Vermeir & Heiremans has a long-standing relationship with architecture. Since 2006 both artists have been developing A.I.R, an ongoing research project that encompasses various collaborations in different formats. Their collaborative project examines domestic architecture as an ideological gesture. At the 10th Istanbul Biennial in 2007 they presented part of their research in a video installation. In 2009 they made their first short film The Good Life (a guided tour), a commission of the Arnolfini Art Center in Bristol.
They have participated in artist residency programs, such as P.S.1, New York and Platform Garanti, Istanbul. Since September 2009 they have taken up residency at the CEAC in Xiamen, China.

Living and born: The Netherlands.

The art works of Karin van Dam (1959), whether drawings or large three-dimensional installations, invite the viewer to a sensory immersion, to go on a journey through the landscape of her imagination. The entrance to this private domain is rendered easier due to the sensual appeal of the materials she uses: paper rubbed with black crayon, corrugated tubes, pieces of rubber, scaffolding, automobile sunscreens, ponds, catch pits, lengths of velvet or soft wool. The installations can virtually always be literally entered as well, by walking around them or viewing them from above by way of a rope ladder.

Karin van Dam’s commitment is expressed in her fusion of art and everyday life. The intuitive work of developing images and relations from her own immediate environment that she regards as a stimulating factor and which she therefore welcomes with open arms is a constant element in her work. Karin van Dam looks straight through the standard structures and sees mystery shimmering behind them, and it is precisely this mysterious factor that motivates her work. By merging the structures and the mystery in enigmatic, poetic artworks, she endeavours to convey this personal experience to the public. One might say that Karin van Dam operates with the aid of a sixth sense, the mysterious factor that brings together all emotional and sensory experiences in a single clear mental image – that of a fabulous journey through an unknown urban landscape.

Klitsa Antoniou is presenting her latest work at the Chinese European Art Center in Xiamen, on the 10h of September. The exhibition consists of multimedia installations constructions and photographs. The works are dealing with issues of displacement, hybridism, transience and mutation, utopia and dystopia, memory and identity.

Dr Antonis Danos, art historian, writes:In Stories of Dystopia, the viewer is led into a seemingly strange universe, which has been created by the stuff of wishes, dreams and frustrations, both our individual, as well as our collective ones, particularly, as in a bit ants of a small land, surrounded by water.
